In April of 2013, Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) first made its debut on TV. An action-packed fantasy anime, full of mysteries and wonders which catered to both the casual anime lover and the professional critic alike. Given high praises for its uniqueness and the ability to move the viewers and make them sit on the edge of their seats left to wonder what is going to happen next!

Unfortunately… just like Wall Maria, good things must come to an end and you’ve probably just finished watching the Attack on Titan series and are now left itching for some more revenge-driven, thriller packed anime.

Below is a list of other anime series which are similar and like Attack on Titan and are worth giving a watch.

1) Fullmetal Alchemist

Fullmetal Alchemist - Alphonse Elric and Edward Elric
Fullmetal Alchemist – Alphonse Elric and Edward Elric

At first glance, Fullmetal Alchemist looks like a typical action show complete with an armour-clad protagonist and his little kid companion but viewers are pulled straight into the true depth of the story within the first couple of minutes.

Now, this varies from the 2003 version to the reboot version titled Brotherhood. While both follow the story of the original manga by Hiromu Arakawa, due to the manga still being written, 2003 went it’s own way and ended pretty abruptly which left many fans, myself included, desperately wanting more.

Both versions start off similarly; telling the story of two brothers, Edward and Alphonse Elric and the powerful bond they share. After performing a forbidden ritual under the laws of alchemy, they are literally almost torn apart from each other with the older brother, Edward, only being able to save Alphonse’s soul which is sealed into a suit of armour. Together, they face various obstacles including the corrupt military, killers and even monsters in order to find a way to restore Edward’s limbs and return Alphonse’s body.

2) Seraph of The End

Although Seraph of The End (Owari no Seraph) may look innocent at a first glance, it’s actually action-packed and full of mysteries of its own. It was first released on April 4th, 2015 and it revolves around the idea of a catastrophic epidemic which kills every adult on earth and only children under the ages of 13 are left alive – in the process vampires come out of the woodwork and begin to enslave the remainder of the human population.

The story follows our protagonist Yuichiro (Yuu) and his foster brothers and sisters which are being kept as the vampires’ tasty snacks in a derelict creepy underground city which is located in one of the old run-down towns. Yuu has a dream of one day breaking free with his family and fighting back against his vampire captors.

3) Ajin: Demi-Human

Ajin: Demi-Human is a dark mystery anime which was first released on 16th of January in 2016 and follows the main protagonist Kei Nagai who after his tragic death, gets resurrected due to having the Ajin virus where you basically cannot die. Users who possess the Ajin virus are technically unable to die under any circumstance regardless whether they are completely crushed, their heads get severed from their bodies or even if they were starved.

The story leads on with our protagonist fighting for his life while he is chased by authorities and other entities who despise the Ajin. The goal is to capture him and perform experiments over and over until results are produced. Throughout this entire series, you are left on the edge of your seat while the main protagonist and his friends fight their way to resolve all conflicts between the Ajins and the humans. There are very unique characters and the character development throughout the series is excellent.

A word of warning to any who cannot get into CGI based anime – give this anime a chance because after a few episodes it will leave you craving for more.

4) Tokyo Ghoul

While Tokyo Ghoul is not regarded as an anime with a mysterious secretive storyline such as Attack on Titan, if you were to dig deeper and listen carefully to as the storyline progresses you will start to find out that there are a lot more secrets hidden in plain sight.

Just like Eren from Attack on Titan, Ken Kaneki, the main protagonist of Tokyo Ghoul is a hybrid who is part monster, part human. Unlike the titans, the ghouls look like your everyday average Joe, however, they have to feed on the tasty flesh of normal humans if they want to survive without experiencing adverse side-effects.

The story follows Ken Kaneki who goes on a date and later becomes his date’s main course… After a horrific accident, he awakens to find that an organ of his attacker was transplanted into his body during an emergency surgery that saved his life. The story progresses with Ken adapting to his new life and seeking to make peace amongst the ghouls and humans.

5) Goblin Slayer

Probably one of the most underrated anime available which first had its debut on the 7th of October in 2018. It is jam-packed with twists and turns with many jump-scares and questions… all starting from the first episode! It’s full of both dark fantasy and mysteries from the get-go.

The anime begins with our main protagonist, a priestess… appropriately named, Priestess – who joins a bunch of small-time wannabe adventures who make the mistake to look down on a menial contract at the local adventurers guild. After accepting the contract from the guild they make their way to the destination only to be met with a cruel green fate.

All members apart from the Priestess are met with their untimely demise and just before our beloved priestess is also met with this same fate, her saviour brandishing his worn-out armour and short sword appears, his name… Goblin Slayer. He rescues her and the Priestess’s Goblin Slaying adventure begins.

6) Parasyte

A little change-up, but still in the same category we have Parasyte, also known as Parasyte The Maxim. It’s an excellent anime which revolves around parasitic worm-like alien creatures which enter the body and take it over.

During our protagonist’s sleep, the alien-like creature enters not only his home but also his body. It is later discovered by our protagonist Shinichi, and he finds out that the Parasite which entered his body was named Migi. Due to Shinichi’s headphones, Migi had to enter his body through his arm and thus prevented Migi from fully taking control as the parasites have a time limit to fusing with the host.

The story progresses with changes happening to Shinichi and Migi – some for the better others… not so much. Furthermore, they now have to fight against the other parasitic aliens who are trying to take over the world and prevent that from happening.

7) Elfen Lied

Dark, depressing and very dramatic, Elfen Lied tells the story of a young woman named Lucy who is part of a mutant species of human that the government call Diclonius. Armed with psychokinetic limbs invisible to the human eye that can slice through anything they touch, the Diclonius are feared due to their one notable feature at birth: a pair of horns protruding from their skulls.

While escaping a high-security facility, Lucy is struck by a bullet and falls from a large height where the soldiers on guard make the foolish assumption that she died on impact. Much later, she washes up on a coastal area of a real-life town, Kamakura, Japan but has the personality of a young child and can only utter one word, “Nyuu.”

A pair of cousins take in this strange girl and care for her, while oblivious to the fact that they’re housing somebody who could tear them to pieces in a heartbeat…

8) Gantz

Gantz - Kei and Masaru running away from a train
Gantz – Kei and Masaru running away from a train

An anime full of horror and thriller both written and illustrated by Hiroya Oku – Gantz was released on the 29th of November 2010 and to date is a classic with an awesome OP and storyline.

It starts off with two school friends waiting for a train, in an attempt to save a man from the train tracks both friends die and find themselves in a mysterious game – locked in an apartment and unable to go anywhere. They are also not alone and can see some of the other people who have died and been taken to the mysterious game.

Within the room, there is a black sphere which calls itself “Gantz”. Once the sphere opens up, a strange text appears that notifies all of the occupants in the game that they must kill all of the aliens within a specific amount of time.

If you are after something that will thrill you from start to finish, then Gantz is definitely for you. However, be warned – there are themes of violence and sexual content throughout the show.
