A Small Synopsis

During a skirmish with a rival bike gang, Kaneda Shōtarō’s close friend, Tetsuo is severely injured after nearly crashing into an esper child. While Kaneda tries to find his friend, the military discovers that Tetsuo could possibly have a connection to Akira, an esper who destroyed Tokyo prior to the story.

What Is Good About AKIRA

Animation

First off, the animation. Good LORD the animation. It’s absolutely stunning with the minutest details included to give you a full effect of the sheer large scale of Neo-Tokyo.

Characters

The characters. Specifically Kaneda and his motorcycle gang. While they’re delinquents, they share a brilliant camaraderie with each other that still never fails to make me laugh. Comedy aside, you FEEL what the characters are feeling. When they’re legitimately angry, you can feel the rawness and anguish of each character. It’s absolutely beautiful.

Storyline

The overall story of AKIRA is extremely interesting. When I saw the DVD cover and began watching for the first time, I – like a lot of first-time watchers – assumed it was about a bike gang causing chaos in the city. What we got though? An incredibly thought-out, thrilling and nail-biting story set in a post-apocalyptic world with psychic powers coming into play.

What Is Bad About AKIRA

Adaptational Issues

Due to it being a movie, AKIRA was given a limited timeslot despite the manga’s story being extended a lot more. There was a lot of development and story left out of the film so if you want the full effect, be sure to check out the manga volumes.

Overall Conclusion

AKIRA is a must-watch for any kind of anime fan. With its wonderful story, beautiful art and tragic setting, you’ll be left wanting more.
